The WiscNews will recognize the accomplishments of five girls volleyball players from our coverage area each week.
The efforts may not be the greatest statistically but are notable. We then invite readers to vote for the Supernova, the performance that most stood out to you.
Here are this week’s honorees.
Maddi Quist shines on offense and defense
Senior Madison Quist led Mauston with 23 digs and 16 kills in a 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-12 loss to Nekoosa on Tuesday.

“She really showed up to play some great volleyball that night,” Mauston coach Rachel Peer said. “Maddi really understands the sport of volleyball really well. She does an awesome job of digging and covering the backrow in general. Against Nekoosa, she brought a really high level of energy.”

The Golden Eagles, led by Quist’s nine kills, defeated Adams-Friendship 25-9, 25-23, 22-25, 25-13 on Thursday.
“She can see the open spots on the court so well,” Peer said. “She just capitalizes.”
Kassidy McCaffery shows importance in pair of wins
Poynette senior Kassidy McCaffery finished with 21 digs, nine kills, three aces and a block in a 25-14, 25-21, 25-16 sweep over Columbus on Wednesday.
Poynette coach Jesse Atkins said McCaffery’s serve receive is what stood out the most as she led the team with a 2.56 rating, which “from a coach’s perspective is a dream come true.”
“She is a rock for us – solid and reliable,” Atkins said. “She has quick reactions, accurate passes and a confidence to get every ball she can to aggravate opposing teams and leads them to steer clear of her.”
The next day, McCaffery had 13 digs, four kills and two aces in a 25-15, 25-12, 25-21 loss to Lakeside Lutheran.
“She’s unafraid to pass serves some may shy away from,” Atkins said. “We’ve been spoiled having a passer like Kassidy on our team for so long.”
Emma Sampson has strong week
Senior Emma Sampson helped Fall River sweep Randolph 25-19, 25-15-25-13 with 10 kills on Thursday.
“She came out right away on fire,” Fall River coach Laura Trautmann said. “She was hitting the ball really hard. When I look back at her stats, she had no errors, which is amazing for Emma to come out of a game clean like that. Sometimes she comes out so on fire that sometimes she does hit into the net. Emma played really, really good. She hit the ball hard. She took advantage of their youth in blocking.”

Then at the Watertown Invite on Saturday, Sampson finished with a team-high 12 blocks, helping the Pirates finish the tournament 2-3, beating East Troy and Green Bay Preble.
“We were challenged at the Watertown Invite and we did some awesome things against some bigger teams,” Trautmann said.
Alexis Babiash does it all for Waupun against Berlin
Freshman Alexis Babiash had 100 percent service rate with six aces and controlled the Waupun offense with 25 assists in a 25-11, 25-22, 25-12 victory over Berlin on Thursday.
Waupun coach Chris Harmsen said Babiash’s serving has been huge for the Warriors.
“Along with her great serving, she worked diligently on her footwork in practice all week, and it showed in her setting, especially on balls she had to track down,” Harmsen said.

Harmsen said Babiash hasn’t been off the court for one point this season and her vocal leadership is starting to take shape among the team as her confidence grows.
Waupun finished runner up at the Ripon Invite and while Babiash performed well, there were video issues that proved difficult to get state in time for this report.
Tabitha Buwalda’s serving too much to handle
It’s not often you see someone obtain 18 aces in a single match, but Central Wisconsin Christian’s Tabitha Buwalda did just that as she helped the Crusaders sweep Wayland 25-0, 25-15, 25-5.
She served every point for CWC in the first set, which wowed her coach. She finished with 15 aces in the first set.
“She was serving some really great balls,” CWC coach Dan Ten Napel said. “I knew she was getting a lot of aces because of the 25 points she served, for one thing, it’s really hard just to serve 25 in a row. That’s really difficult actually. She stayed aggressive, she hit a lot of different zones. She kept her approach.”
